uunet sure goes down for long periods of time on sundays..

I haven't been able to get an nntp connection with news.uu.net
since 8 this morning (its now 9PM), likewise, they haven't polled
us since the same time..

the other nntp connections have been working fine (we have 5 others).

Subject: UUNET Ethernet Reorganization Sunday Dec. 20

On Sunday Dec 20th, UUNET will be reorganizing its local ethernet
layout to better handle increasing load. In addition, UUNET will be
reallocating the IP addresses for some of the production hosts. This
reorganization has forced the normal Sunday dumps to be pushed back by
two hours, so they will start at noon Eastern time on Sunday. As
usual, UUCP customers will be unable to transfer files while dumps are
occurring.

Additionally, after the dumps are finished, there will be additional
time during which UUNET will be unreachable while the actual re-wiring
and testing of the new network organization is performed. During part
of this time period (which should start at 3:00pm EST), AlterNet
connectivity may experience several small routing flaps. No routing
problems should persist more than 15 minutes.

When the reorganization is complete, UUCP customers should not see any
functional differences in service. Customers who use TCP/IP to
communicate with UUNET and use the nameserver (BIND) to resolve
addresses should have no problem communicating with us. Only people
who are using hardwired IP addresses for UUNET hosts addresses should
have problems. Given that DNS has been widely deployed on the Internet
for over five years, this should not be a problem. If your hosts are
not using DNS at this time, we strongly urge that you switch all your
computers to use DNS for hostname resolution.

Hostname: Old IP address: New IP address:

I called UUNET up myself on Sunday. UUNET is usually down
until 2pm, but this Sunday it took longer. I spoke to Eric and he
said they were performing a System Upgrade. This would explain
things. It went back up at around 8 or 9pm. It would be nice if
they would have announced it on uunet.general or some such.

It appears that my version of nntpd spawned a bug in their inn
news server in regards to sending the same article over and over.

uunet noticed this, and corrected this early Sunday morning,
but then they went down around 8 for maintenance. News started
flowing again from and to uunet via nntp early Monday morning.

I know they go down every Sunday (I was using them as my primary
namesever, now I use another site) which is a pain (I'm not quite
sure why a news machine would need to go down every Sunday -- we
don't backup news -- that's what nntp is for (grin)).

At least with multiple nntp feeds, we still get a good percentage
of the traffic (nntp operates in IHAVE/SENDME mode where as sites
compare headers prior to sending articles (in ASCII) to avoid
duplicates)..
