Ok, I must say that the copy of RedHat's PowerTools I have is amongst the first ones on the market, but what a core... a chore on the shore with a whore it is to install! First, I made a few errors of my own because I hadn't gone through the installation manual. To the people you don't appreciate mumbo-jumbo like: ------------------------- 2.3.2 Installing From a CD-ROM If you have a Red Hat Linux CD-ROM, and your computer has a supported CD-ROM drive, you should consider this installation method. Installing directly from CD-ROM is the most straightforward approach. When installing from CD-ROM, the packages you select are read from the CD-ROM, and are installed on your hard drive. 2.3.2.1 How To Do It As the name implies, you'll need a Red Hat Linux CD-ROM, a supported CD-ROM drive, and a means of starting the installation program. (...) If your Red Hat Linux partitions will be sharing a hard disk with partitions used by other operating systems, most of the time you'll have no problems. However, there are certain combinations of Linux and other operating systems that require extra care. Information on creating disk partitions compatible with other operating systems is available in several HOWTOs and Mini-HOWTOs, available on the Red Hat Linux CD in the doc/HOWTO and doc/HOWTO/mini directories. In particular, the Mini-HOWTOs whose names start with Linux+ are quite helpful. --------------- ... to those people, I strongly recommend skipping to section 4.3 of the installation manual. Rest assured you'll still have enough to read. I'm positively certain a fairly talented Picarro could boil this down to one tenth of the size. (I suspect too many tax form writers have been laid off recently and offered their services at prices RedHat Bob couldn't refuse.) Then, to build the kernel, I tried to use the "make" command... which was nowhere to be found. I then discovered on DejaNews that you had to install all the C, C++ paraphernalia to get a compiler (and assorted librairies, I suppose). Of course, this wasn't selected by default when installing. Then, hours later, great, the command did work! It sent me a "no rule to make target" message. I went on checking while my tongue was cheeking to ponder which of the 37 different answers I got from dejaNews and Alta Vista was the right one. Even Redhat sent me to pages which had absolutely no relation to the matter and "401s, page not found"! Finally, nothing works. I'm stuck in a deadlock with the puck in front of the net! Can someone tell me how to skate my way out of this... and how much time I can expect to loose absolutely in vain to get Linux installed.
