What ? Iguana's next meeting !
Where ? 'De Kam', Wezembeek-Oppem
When ? september 14-15, 1996
Why ? Because the year has almost come to an end...

Inconceivable, but true... 1996 has almost come to an end, and still you
haven't seen any announcement for an Iguana-meeting ? We could give you
several reasons why this meeting, that could have been expected half a
year ago, only takes place in september... But - noblesse oblige - here
we are. We already brought Linus Torvalds, Alan Cox and Remy Card to
Belgium in 1994 (their first (and only) time !). This is a tradition
we'd like to confirm this year.

But in 1996, we're willing to give some other, perhaps less known
developers, airplay in Belgium. We'll be welcoming Evgueni Tcherkachine,
aka Eugene Crosser, author of the ifmail-package. Ifmail is a complete
package that allows you to run a fidonetnode on your linux-(or *x-)box.
Not only will it communicate with another node using dial-up modems or
ISDN - you can also setup a session via the Internet, and much, much
more... Eugene is there to tell you all about it, and to answer your
questions, which you didn't the answer for in the documentation.

From the UK, we expected Alan Cox to pay us another visit. Alan is a
well-known linux- activist, and those of you who were at the Linuverse
meeting of 1994 will certainly remember him. Alan couldn't make it to
Belgium though, due to his professional activities.

The grass is always greener on the other side... But the Iguana-grass is
fairly green too... Our variety even has a name: Peter De Schrijver aka
p2. In 1994, P2 presented his efforts on token ring support in the
linuxkernel. As this is now part of the standard kernel, he just needed
to broaden his minds. Peter will be entertaining you about a fourletter
word without pejorative meanings: ISDN. How do you combine linux and
ISDN ? What can you do with it, but, even more important, how do you do
it ?

Linux is a multi-platform operating system. Overhere in Belgium, we got
several people working on it. Geert Uytterhoeven for the Amiga-version,
Peter -octopus- De Schrijver who got an Apollo workstation to boot a
small kernel, and last but not least, Eddie Dost who has been
developing for Sparc-linux.

From Germany, we might expect someone from StarDivision, a software
company who has a Linuxversion of her StarOffice package. At this very
moment though, we have not received any official confirmation yet.

Finally, there'll also be some subjects where linux is not the main
point of interest. First of all, PGP, Pretty Good Privacy. Eric
Danneels, yet another Iguana-member, will talk about this TLA. For some
people, it's a philty TLA, others consider it as a blessing for
mankind... This presentation will be followed by a PGP keysigning
session where you can get your public key signed by others.
Be sure to bring enough people to make it a snowball- effect-alike party !

Linux installationparty

The party must go on. If you don't have that latest
RedHat-/SlackWare-/Debian-/... linux distribution yet, if you lost
everything since the last meeting, this is your chance ! What do you
need ? Your machine (including keyboard, screen, powercables), free
space (you'll want at least a primary partition of min. 200 MB) on your
harddisk, floppies, tapes (be sure you have your own tapestreamer
handy),... An ethernet-NIC might come in very handy. We offer 10Base2-
(preferred) and 10BaseT-connections. If you don't have your own ethernet
NIC yet, you'll be able to purchase one (NE2000-compatible/ISA-bus) at
less than 1.500,- BFr at the meeting...
Iguanamembers will try to help you out, setting up a basic linuxsystem
during 2 hours in the afternoon.
If you can't make it this time, you can rehearse at the
http://www.rtfm.be/24heures/. Iguana will take care of the linux
installationparty.
14-15 Sep is also an ideal chance to get help in setting up a working
ifmail configuration. At least 5 Iguana staff-members are ifmail users
themselves and with Eugene at hand, even the thoughest ifmail problem
won't have much chance of surviving this meeting.

Mac-linux installation - non-iX86-machines running linux

Linux is a multi-platform operating system... Apart from the
Intel-architecture, also Amiga, PowerMac and Sparc runs Linux... You'll
be able to see this with your own eyes. As for the PowerMac, if you have
one, if you can spare some HD-space, you should bring your machine to
install linux on it. Courtesy of MacBel UG.

Internet-access ?

It's a tradition for Iguanameetings not to take place without
Internet-access... If Belgacom serves us well, we'll have a (bleeding
edge) ISDN-connection to the Net... You won't get bored with any
AXION!-commercials while surfing though.

Quakefest

You don't need IPX on the network to run Quake... IP will do. We have a
local Quakeserver available, be sure to have a networkcard installed. If
you don't have Quake for your machine already, you can ftp it from our
local FTP-servers at the meeting. Get prepared for the contest now ! The
profile of your machine: P5-90 with 16 MB of RAM and a fast videocard...
