FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

THE UNIVERSITY OF GEORGIA

JANUARY 15, 1992

On December 5, 1991 the AIDS Memorial Quilt University of Georgia Host
Committee received approval to display a portion of the Quilt. The
display will be February 18-21, 1992 in Georgia Hall of the Tate Student
Center on the University of Georgia Campus. The display will feature 192
panels of the Quilt. Many of the 192 panels were made in the Southeast.
Right now the Host Committee is working hard to raise the funds needed
to host the display. Projected costs are over $5,000.

The NAMES Project AIDS Memorial Quilt is made up of 3 foot by 6 foot panels.
It is a clear and undeniable representation of the enormity of the
AIDS crisis. Started in 1987, over 14,000 panels now comprise the Quilt.
There are panels dedicated to friends, lovers, family members, and children
who have been lost to AIDS. These panels commemorate those who have died--
their lives, their accomplishments, their sorrows, their anger over AIDS
and society's response to the crisis. The Quilt is a powerful, touching
reminder that AIDS does not kill numbers, it kills people.

The Host Committee seeks to confront people with the urgency and enormity
of AIDS and the need for an immediate and compassionate response; to build
a powerful symbol of remembrance and hope in the shared expression of grief,
pain, and rage in response to AIDS; to encourage donations for AIDS support
agencies that provide support for those people living with AIDS and their
caregivers; to promote HIV/AIDS education; and to combat prejudice and
discrimination against people with HIV infection and AIDS.

To accomplish these goals, the committee need the support of the community.
A good amount of money (about half of the display's cost) has already been
raised from a benefit and donations from campus organizations, businesses,
and persons in the community and, but more is needed to meet anticipated
expenses. Every little bit helps. Funds raised in excess of display
expenses and all donations during the display will be donated to AIDS Athens
to support AIDS education and direct support of people living with AIDS.
Those seeking to make a contribution to the display are requested to
contact Dann Early at (404) 542-6396 or Vernon Wall at (404) 542-8316.

The Closing Ceremony of the display on Friday, February 21, 1992 will
feature the presentation of completed panels to be included into the
Quilt. Those persons wishing to make panels for someone who has been
lost to AIDS are encouraged to do so. For information on how to make
a panel or how to submit one for the Quilt, contact either Dann Early
or Vernon Wall.
