It started quite a bit earlier than that, however.
Particularly it began with Texan independence, which was prompted by
extensive immigration into Texas of US citizens.

Texas declared independence from Mexico in 1836, largely driven by US
immigrants who had moved into Texas in the preceding decade (the city
of Austin was founded by US immigrants, for example).

Texas was admitted to the Union in 1845.

The treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo was 1848.

Thus the issue significantly predates your treaty.
