Is there anyplace I can buy cell phone service without a credit check? I'm willing to pay a full year contract in advance.

You can get prepaid cell phone service from a great many places including WalMart, Radio Shack, and lots of other places. No credit check since you pay in advance.

Good place to start:
http://clarkhoward.com/topics/cellphones.html
It's just a jumping-off page to other sites that compare phones and
plans, but I tend to trust Clark's recommendations.

I run Virgin Mobile. ~$6/mo 25cents a minute. If I need to make a phone call on the road, the sky is falling. If I get a call on it, it had better be in time for me to avoid the meteor hitting the road I'm on. Voicemail and text messages are disabled on my phone. I've gotten exactly one call from work that had to be dealt with immediately in 3 yrs. Critical. Disabling critical. This has worked well for me. I deal with a business with a night service where there is no phone. I have to have a phone for emergencies. NC (Business of the night)

I've been using Sprint PCS, personally. They run a credit check, but
they're pretty lenient when it comes to it, if you're willing to go for
a two year contract. I have pretty bad credit and they let me get my
phone. YMMV, but you may be able to try them and find that it's not a
bad deal.
Your best bet on their service is to go with the lowest number of
minutes that you'd use, or try their Fair & Flexible plan, which changes
to grow with you.
Later,
Mike
