(Our speaker has supplied the following)
Linux has established a powerful and permanent presence in the
computing world for the foreseeable future and many major
industry forces are investing heavily to advance the future of
open source computing. Most server hardware platforms have
adopted robust support of the Linux operating system (pro-
actively or reactively) for application serving but, are all 64-
bit platforms created equal?
This presentation will examine many of the similarities and
differences associated with both alternative processor
architectures (Intel Itanium2 & Xeon EM64T, AMD Opteron, IBM
POWER5) and system designs. Intel processors dominate the
industry on volumes, AMD has introduced a unique design
compatible with Intel's software portfolio and IBM has driven the
POWER processor to the dominant RISC implementation and all
approach different aspects of Linux computing and provide
different value propositions. This presentation will examine the
different chip options, concerning Linux and Unix variants, and
how the marketplace effects the future

Prior to the meeting, there will be an informal, non-structured
"guru" session open to anyone wishing to attend. This will start
around 6:45pm in the meeting room, and we will have one or more
gurus available to discuss whatever topics/problems/questions the
attendees care to bring up.

It is with great pride that we recognize our Corporate Sponsors.
Being aware of the contributions made by the AUUG membership to the
UNIX community, these firms, both large and small, have made a
commitment to provide financial assistance for defraying the
operating expenses of AUUG. We are both pleased and grateful for
their sponsorship, and hope that they will continue to support AUUG
in the days to come.

For those who need some sustenance before the meeting, you will
find kindred AUUG spirits at "Fuddruckers" restaurant (240
Perimeter Center Pkwy) on Hammond Drive across from Perimeter Mall
and not far from the Hewlett-Packard building. Drop in any time
after 5:30pm to sit around and chew the fat and indulge in some of
the Fuddruckers cuisine. This is a chance for folks to get
together and exchange rumors, ideas, assistance, etc.
-------------------------------------------------------------------
There is no charge to attend the meeting, nor any fee for
membership. Just show up!
