Alexander Dawson has a Proposal You Should See

A proposal put forth by the Alexander Dawson Foundation (ADF) comes in
front of the Boulder County Land Use Board (LUB) on Wednesday, November
15, sometime after 1:30 p.m. If you are a parent of children at
Alexander Dawson School (ADS) or may send children to ADS in the future,
attending this meeting should be a high priority. If you are a Boulder
County taxpayer concerned with educational quality or possible legal
liabilities this proposal may introduce, you should also attend. If you
can't attend but would like to convey concerns or questions, I would be
happy to carry your letter to the LUB meeting on Wednesday. If so, please
state which of the above groups you fall into. Requesting that the LUB
table consideration of the proposal to allow adequate review by all
concerned couldn't hurt.

To prepare for the LUB meeting, standard procedures regarding communications
about this proposal have been followed. However, the parties that will be
most affected by it have been left out of the process altogether--namely,
the ADS students and their parents. Since these parents pay private
tuition dollars to send their children to ADS, they are also arguably the
most interested in the outcome of this process.

This proposal is about neither a residential development nor a standard
commercial development though it contains elements of both. It's about
a private school with no oversight by the State Board of Education. ADS
is rooted in this county and hopefully provides fruits to us. Schools
can have very long respectable histories, they can be embarrassing
failures, or languish somewhere in between. You should ask yourself which
type you support, and take appropriate measures.

This proposal needs to be evaluated as a special case. It has potential
impacts for far too many people to be handled following just the standard
procedures mentioned above. Its impacts, both short- and long-term, need
to be understood fully by all affected parties before enactment.

Discussion encouraged, but please email or better yet fax me any letters
you wish passed on to the board, since I don't get this newsgroup and this
post is being performed by a friend.

Respectfully and sincerely,

A reader of this newsgroup item asks a reasonable question:

So here I give a summary of the proposal, and general areas of concern
with it:

The proposal being put forward by the Alexander Dawson Foundation
(ADF) regards several development projects at the Alexander Dawson
School (ADS) site, located west of HWY 287, south of Lookout Road, west
of Erie in eastern Boulder County.

The proposal seeks approval from Boulder County to

construct a large gymnasium and new athletic
	fields

refurbish the existing gymnasium, creating a
	dedicated performing arts center

build additions to several existing buildings
	in the "core campus"

construct an elementary school outside of the
	"core campus"

In addition, the proposal requests that the student limit at the
school be raised from 300 to 450 with the addition of the elementary
school.

While growth at the school is not a bad thing per se (IMHO), I and
others who have had a chance to see the proposal believe some important
concerns regarding the proposal have not been adequately addressed by
the ADF. They include

safety for foot and pedestrian traffic

adequate space for elementary and middle school facilities
	including indoor and outdoor areas

location of borders between ADS and Boulder County Open
Space, and the possibility of Legal Liability for the
County (read, its taxpayers) arising from student traffic
THROUGH COUNTY OPEN SPACE AREAS between the upper and lower
	campuses at ADS

the elimination of future expansion sites at ADS, meaning
that the ADF is painting ADS into a corner as far as future
	buildings are concerned

I could go on a great length about these issues, but I suggest interested
parties contact the ADF and/or the Boulder County Land Use Board for more
details on the proposal. Remember to ask the Land Use Board to table
considering the proposal if you need more time to digest the information
in the proposal.

Thanks for your attention,
Mark
