As promised, here is a summary of responses I received. -------------------------------------------------------------------- My favorite coffee shop is The Cup & Chaucer, upstairs at the Oxford Bookstore in the Peachtree Battle shopping center on Peachtree Road half way to Buckhead. They are open till midnight on the weekdays, and till 2AM on the weekends I think. The atmosphere is great (except for the cigarette smoking), and the crowd is eclectic. They have a second bookstore with another interesting coffee shop on Pharr Road in Buckhead. It is larger, but I prefer the former. --------------------------------------------------------------------- Any Waffle House other than at peak hours when the tables are full. My favorite is the one right off the 120 loop on Rosswell Road. Of course even they are going to boot you out if you go in at noon with standing room only and spread out in a booth. --------------------------------------------------------------------- Unfortunately, I cannot really suggest any decent coffee shops of the sort you seem to be seeking. I hesitantly would recommend the Oxford Bookstore in Buckhead (on Pharr Road). Their coffee is OK, though they charge for each refill. The shop is nice, but the only view you get is of other bookworms. The best coffee in atlanta is to be had at a little shop in the Toco Hills shopping center, called the Coffee Plantation. It is not really a cafe, as you seem to be seeking, but actually it is a coffee roaster. They do have about 5 tiny tables, but I don't think they'd be too happy to have someone move in and get settled (not that they've ever suggested such a thing, only the place is not suited to it.) But their coffee itself is without equal in the area. (Really. I've probably tried just about every roaster in the region!) If you do come across any cafes of the sort where you could get settled with work and/or a book, please let me know. --------------------------------------------------------------------- tho I am not a coffee drinker, the Aurora (sp?) Coffeehouse at the corner of Virginia and Highland is sposed to be phenomenal.....the owner is from Seattle (where they have LOTS of coffeehouses.... ` --------------------------------------------------------------------- Well, you've probably heard about Oxford Book Store, they have a coffee shop @ the Pharr Road location in Buckhead, and maybe they still have the one @ Peachtree Battle shopping center. If you want to work, avoid the Pharr Road loaction Sunday, Mon, & Tues. evenings as they have (good) acoustic guitar players from 8:30 until 10:00 or so. Then there's Jakes @ Midtown Promenade (Virginia @ Monroe) which has outside tables, too. It can get busy on weekend nights, but otherwise it is quiet and peaceful. --------------------------------------------------------------------- Cafe Intermezzo, R Thomas and most most especially, the coffee shops in Oxford Books - the Cup and Chaucer, and i forget what the one at pharr road is called. but those are stupendeous. less ambiance are the many steak and shakes, or denny's or waffle house. hmm perhaps i should say different ambiance, not less! waffle house is always unique, with it's own brand of ambiance. in anycase, all of the above are great places to work, especially at night. or talk, or just sit. oxford books is open until midnight, --------------------------------------------------------------------- Try Cafe Intermezzo accross the street from Perimeter mall. I believe the centeris named Elan. Good coffee, tea, pastry, and atmosphere. At least a couple of years ago when I used to hang out there. --------------------------------------------------------------------- You might enjoy Cafe' Diem, which is located on N Highland Ave between Ponce de Leon Ave and North Ave. --------------------------------------------------------------------- Two places that I personally like are: Cafe Intermezzo at Park Place on Ashford Dunwoody Road - Classy place but informal for desert and coffee (many types of both). Can get quite busy/noisy. Waiters are generally very patient. Peachtree Battle Bookstore on Peachtree Road - very informal and very small upstairs cafe at the very popular bookstore. It is tough to find a place to sit here and they don't really wait on you. You just go to the register and order what you want. --------------------------------------------------------------------- If you have more suggestions please let us know.
