Our May Meeting...
Our May meeting will be held at the Georgia Institute of Technology's College
of Computing. Jim Denneney, of Silicon Graphics, will present Cosmo - SGI's
WWW Development Kit. In December 1995, SGI unveiled Cosmo, a powerful set
of advanced technologies bringing inter active multimedia and 3D graphics
to the World Wide Web. Cosmo encompasses software products for creating
and viewing interactive multimedia and tools for developing interactive
applications. Included in this multimedia software suite are Cosmo Create,
Cosmo Code, Cosmo Player and Cosmo MediaBase, all of which support the
open standards of the Web including HTML, VRML 2.0 from Silicon Graphics,
and the Java programming language from Sun Microsystems.
COSMO CREATE is an application suite for creating interactive, new media
presentations and worlds. The product blends multi-media and real-time
computer graphics technologies to produce a new generation of interactive
titles and experiences.
COSMO CODE provides an integrated set of visual tools for the Java
programming language, enabling developers to create cross-platform and
interactive applications. The package includes an integrated run-time
interpreter, compiler, debugger, and object-oriented static analyzer. It
also includes support of multi-threaded debugging of Java code, graphical
representation of Java class dependencies and relationships and the
ability to set and remove breakpoints and step into Java functions. Cosmo
class libraries and Visual Applet Builder will ship this Summer.
COSMO PLAYER is an interactive multimedia viewer that can be used as a
primary browser or as a plug-in to existing Web browsers. The Cosmo Motion
engine, a runtime environment embedded in Cosmo Player, is also licensable
for incorporation into other browsers.
COSMO MEDIABASE is a new class of media asset management software that
enables interactive access and provides structure to multimedia Web sites.
The new software gives Web developers and Web site managers dynamic
capabilities for storage, retrieval, delivery and management of the
increasing volume and complexity of multimedia data.

Universite de Montreal Announces CECILIA
----------------------------------------
CECILIA is a music/sound production system that uses MIT's Csound as its
sound-processing language. CECILIA is available as an SGI executable

was designed with all Csound users in mind, but specially those whose main
concern is the efficient production of music and sound. Its principal aim
is to enhance production by proposing a powerful design interface and a
number of "speed" tools in an integrated environment. Almost all
Csound-related tasks will enjoy an enormous productivity boost under
CECILIA.

Frequently Asked Questions
(Selections from USENET's comp.sys.sgi.* newsgroups)
Q: I heard IRIX 5.3 and 6.2 comes with a free Insignia SoftWindows
license. How can I get it to work on my system?
A: SGI ships a 1 user license for SoftWindows v2.0 with every Indy with a
secondary cache (SC) otherwise, it will not work. The license is stored
in:
/usr/lib/SoftWindows/FLEXlm/license.dat
...and is not provided in paperform, so whatever you do, don't remove
this file without getting a hardcopy or backup first. Otherwise, you
will need to call SGI or Insignia for help.
Q: My SGI crashed and generated a core file, /usr/adm/crash/vmcore.1.
How can I examine this file to see what crashed my system?
A: For a start, you can use 'dbx' like so:
dbx -k /var/adm/crash/{unix,vmcore}.#
t
&putbuf/1000s
Some machines have a special 'dbx' for crash dumps, /usr/adm/crash/dbx.
If it exists, use it instead of /usr/bin/dbx. The IRIX 5.x Electronic
Services package includes a script, 'crpt', which does this and more
automagically. A copy of the IRIX 5.2 ver sion can be found at the FTP
site,
ftp://viz.tamu.edu/pub/sgi/software/admin/crpt.
Also, SGI's 'icrash' utility can generate helpful reports and allow
experienced administrators and support people to sift through the core
file (get patch 813 for IRIX 5.3 or patch 769 for IRIX 6.1).
Q: Where's the C compiler?
A: IRIX doesn't include a C compiler. Buy the Iris Developer's Option
(IDO), which includes SGI's C compiler. Yes, it is expensive. Ignore
/usr/cpu/sysgen/root/usr/bin/cc; it's only for rebuilding the kernel.
Don't bother with gcc; it's useless without the libraries and header
files in the IDO.

IRIX Bug Watch
SGI's New WWW-based Security Headquarters
-----------------------------------------
In April, SGI unveiled its new WWW-based Security Headquarters. The
purpose of the pages is to provide an information resource on computer
security for the SGI computing environment and for computer security in
general. The site provides easy access to SGI Security Engineers, SGI
Security Advisories, security patches, public domain security software and
more. The new site can be found at the following URL:
http://www.sgi.com/Support/Secur/security.html
SGI Recommended Patch Sets...
-----------------------------
SGI finally has begun to release sets of recommended patches for certain
IRIX releases. Recommended patches are patches that SGI suggests you
should install and they are considered crucial to the successful operation
of your system. They are mostly security fixes but also include such
things as kernel stability fixes. The sets are located at the following
URL:
http://www.sgi.com/SurfZone/Support/recpatch/
The sets are provided by hardware type and operating system level.
NSF V3 RPC.LOCKD PROBLEM: Non-SGI NSF clients (e.g. Sun Solaris
2.5) cannot create and lock a file on an SGI IRIX 5.3 NSF3 file server.
The file is created, however the lock attempt fails. The IRIX 5.3NSF3
server does not implement NLM V4 locking. The workaround is to force the
non-SGI client to mount the file system as a NFS2 volume (i.e. use the
"vers=2" option).
WORKSHOP/R5000 PROBLEM: It appears that CaseVision WorkShop v2.4
and v2.5 for Irix v5.3 will not run on R5000 systems. However, v2.6.1
will run on an R5000 system with Irix 5.3 or 6.2.

About ASUG...
The Atlanta Silicon Graphics User's Group (ASUG) is a volunteer-run
organization that meets 6 times a year usually on the 2nd Tuesday on
alternating months to share ideas and talk about experiences with
Silicon Graphics hardware and software. Our meetings involve visualization
and general UNIX topics. We don't elect officers, impose dues or charge
cover. Silicon Graphics graciously foots the bill for the cost of mailing
our newsletter. ASUG is populated with professionals from around the
Southeast and from a wide spectrum of commercial and non-commercial
institutions. Our meetings provide excellent opportunities for people to
share their experiences and techniques with others, express their
interests and concerns to Silicon Graphics, and pick up bits of
information worthy of taking back to work. Our group is always looking
for volunteers and ideas about future meetings.
