Apologies for the widespread distribution.]
The Free Software Foundation,
the Software Engineers Association of Japan,
and the Japan Unix Society
invite you to attend the
Tokyo GNU Technical Seminar
Wednesday, December 2 and Thursday, December 3, 1992
9:30 am to 6:00 pm
International House of Japan
(Kokusai Bunka Kaikan)
5-11-16 Roppongi, Minato-ku, Tokyo
Speakers
--------
Richard M. Stallman
President & Founder, Free Software Foundation
Richard Stallman will describe the major software components of the
GNU system (including Emacs, languages, GDB, OLEO, Ghostscript, fonts,
and database systems) explaining their status and work currently in
progress as well as tasks we hope others will volunteer to work on.
This talk will be given in English and simultaneously translated into
Japanese.
Michael I. Bushnell
GNU Kernel developer, Free Software Foundation
The GNU Kernel consists of three modules -- the Mach kernel, the GNU
Hurd, and the GNU C library -- and includes Posix-like functionality.
The Mach kernel, developed at CMU, provides superb virtual memory
facilities, as well as task, thread, and interprocess communication
abstractions. The GNU Hurd, a set of servers being developed by the Free
Software Foundation, provides access to filesystems and terminal driver
semantics, as well as coordination facilities essential to presenting a
Unix-like interface. The GNU C Library will call upon the features of
the kernel and the Hurd in presenting a Posix and BSD compatible
interface to programmers, as well as binary compatibility with existing
systems. This talk will focus on the facilities provided by the Mach
kernel, the GNU Hurd, and some of the issues involved in writing the GNU
C Library. The speaker is the principal architect and author of the
Hurd. This talk will be given in English and simultaneously translated
into Japanese.
Dr. Ken'ichi Handa
Electro-Technical Laboratories
MULE -- a Multilingual version of GNU Emacs -- is currently under
development based on Emacs version 18.58. It has been extended to
support Chinese, Korean, and many European languages in addition to
English and Japanese. This talk will focus on the most significant
modifications to Emacs, including extending the internal data
representations to support multilingual text and user I/O related issues.
This talk will be given in Japanese.
