bash and emacs shell command

Sirs:
   I finally managed to get bash up and running as the primary shell under
SCO Unix 3.2.  However, whenever I do a M-x shell in emacs, all output is 
terminated by the message:

/bin/bash: [1581: 4] tcgetattr: Not a typewriter
^M
bash$

Does this mean something?
