Weird long line behavior -- NeXT problem or general?

On a NeXT (0.9), inside the Terminal window (a vt100 emulator), there are
these problems with long (2 or more line) commands:
1. hitting C-a takes the cursor to the beginning of the line it is already
in, instead of going to the first character in the command line.
2. Typing in an N-line command (N > 2), the following happens when you
backspace (C-b) from the end of the command to the beginning:
a. Line N is duplicated (printed below the original line N, but:
b. The last character disappears and line N is shifted over to
the right by one character, blank filling column 1.
c. The last character in line N-1 disappears.
d. The last character in line X gets replaced with the last character
in line X+1, where 1<=X<=N-2.
3. Aborting the command entry with C-c does not move the cursor past the
text of the long command, so prompt shows up in the midst of that text.
Does any of this happen on other terminals (esp. on real VT100s?) Not
having any other terminals to test this on, I can't tell if it's a
NeXT-specific problem or not.
