Gnuchess for the Mac

I've recently obtained a copy of Gnuchess for the Mac from a FTP site

I have a question for anyone who may have used this concerning the
opening book.

Is it possible to modify the opening book file (gnuchess.book) using a
text editor (such as Microsoft Word) that the application will recognize?

Will I have to recompile Gnuchess to do this (I currently don't have a
C compiler on my Mac)?

If this is possible, I'd like to be able to tailor the opening book so
that I can practice my favorite openings. Has anyone out there done this?
