I've got Gnuchess 4.0 patchlevel 55 and Xboard 2.0 and can't seem to get them talking to each other. I'm on a Sun sparc under SunOS 4.1.1 and have compiled both packages using GCC 2.0. When I run xboard a window comes up with the board and pieces but the only command button I see is the one that says 'Machine Black' (and it is highlighted). Nothing else happens. If I do a ps I see that gnuchess and xboard are running: 3336 p8 S 0:00 xboard 3337 p8 S 0:00 gnuchessx 40 5 If I kill gnuchess then the rest of the command buttons in the xboard window appear and they work fine although I get a message that says: 'xboard: first chess program (gnuchessx) exited unexpectedly. If I run xboard with the -noChessProgram TRUE option xboard runs fine. If I run gnuchessx by hand it appears to run fine. I've changed many of the options in my app-defaults/XBoard resources file and they all work except for this problem with gnuchess and xboard together. Since no else seems to be having this problem I imagine it's me doing something stupid (very likely). Does anyone have any clues? Thanks. - Doak Heyser

'Make install' didn't put one there and I never used the hash table option. A 'touch gnuchess.hash' solved the problem. Just in case anyone was curious ... - Doak

Let us know if you find the problem. And Doak says now: > Thanks for the response. Another reader suggested I put > gnuchess.[lang, book, hash] in my designated LIBDIR and it > worked. I already had the *lang and *book but I had to add > by hand the *hash with a 'touch gnuchess.hash'. Thanks again. I don't really understand why this worked, but there it is for anyone else it might help. --Tim
