A new GNU Chess and Xboard are available in gnuchess-4.0.pl58.tar.Z on prep.ai.mit.edu (18.71.0.38). The changes to GNU Chess are more significant than at first glance. Testing shows a score of 20 to 15 for GNU Chess 4.0 vs GNU Chess 3.1. This works out to a 50 point rating difference. This version of GNU Chess 4.0 (patchlevel 58) is probably stronger, it is safe to say, than previous versions of GNU Chess, including the version that won the recent Uniform Platform Computer Chess Tournament in London, England. Here is a description of the changes in Xboard, patchlevel 23: Mon Aug 10 18:40:47 PDT 1992 (patchlevel 23) mann@src.dec.com - Fixed parser bugs in handling moves with rank or file disambiguator, e.g. N1f3 or Ngf3. - Added code so parser can handle fully qualified algebraic, e.g., Ng1-f3, N/g1-f3, Ng1f3, or even Pe2-e4. The "P" and "/" work only for fully qualified moves, not generally. - Note parser limitation: If a move is ambiguous, the parser takes the first possible interpretation it runs across instead of noticing the ambiguity and reporting an error. And here are the changes in GNU Chess 4.0, patchlevel 58. Mon Aug 24 Patchlevel 58 Mike McGann (mwm@hssler.ascom.ch) * add Mwpawn, Mbpawn, Mw..., Mb... , p and debug commands to gnuchessr. * Fix bug in evaluation logic for hung pieces. * Fix time control calculation to add time at time control Let's thank Mike and Tim for their work. --Stuart
