I'm trying to get the opening book working with gnu chess 4.0 pl60 and xboard 2.0 pl 25. I've built the .book.data file as instructed using gnuchessr -b gnuchess.book -B gnuchess.book.data -S (different numbers, e.g., 5000) and gnuchessr says that the book is built. I can't seem to get xboard (or even the curses-based) to play through any of the openings in the book. I'd like to practice openings, and have xboard (gnuchess) randomly choose an opening that matches the moves made so far (and likewise, when it plays white, to pick an opening and stick to it, or adapt based on what my responses are. Is this what the opening book is for? It doesn't seem to make more than one or maybe two moves from an opening before going off on its own tangent. I've tried almost all combinations of the "random," "easy", "book" commands, etc. Another question: the -st option doesn't seem to do anything, only the -sd option does. If I tell gnuchess to limit moves to 20 seconds, it takes much longer to generate moves (especially at endgame positions). If I give the -sd (search depth) option, it seems to faithfully stick to this, but I'd rather have it search deeper in endgame positions to play better, but I don't want to wait a minute for each move! Any help would be greatly appreciated. thanks, Ken -- Kenneth Whaley (408) 748-6347 Kubota Pacific Computer, Inc. Email: whaley@kpc.com 2630 Walsh Avenue Santa Clara, CA. 95051

I've had some success with the following incantation to build the "GDX" book as suggested in doc/BOOKFILES: gnuchessr -b gnuchess.book -B gnuchess.book.data -S 450000 It takes a bit of time for this to complete. Xboard 2.0.23 appears to play (very quickly) from book with this setup. What I'd like to know, is how to set up gnuchess book to work with the text book as before. I really can't afford to store the 5+Mb .data binary file. Jon Vander Hill jon@cas.org
