HELP! -- Compile Problem.

When I try to run gnuchess-4.0 I get the following error message:

FIONREAD: Operation not supported on socket
  You probably have a non-ANSI <ioctl.h>;

I tried the suggestion in the WARNING file of using the
"-traditional-cpp" flag when compiling, but this didn't help.
Apparently, I have an older non-ANSI C Compiler. I would appreciate
it if someone could explain to me how to solve this problem, and
explain it in a way that a non-computer person could understand (I
didn't understand the second suggestion in the WARNING file). Please
email responses to rhoads@paul.rutger.edu. Thanks in advance!
