Don't you know of prep.ai.mit.edu?
Here is what to do:

 ftp prep.ai.mit.edu
 logon: anonymous
 password: <your email adress>
 cd pub/gnu
 tenex
 get gnuchess-4.0.pl56.tar.Z
 quit

Simple enough?

I have no ivory tower, only a clock tower :-(
