If I'm using emacs version 18.58 (berkeley-unix),
and if I'm running M-x shell in a buffer,
and if the program in that buffer is executing merrily and sending
stuff to standard output (i.e., to that buffer),
and if I meanwhile decide to look at bytes near the top of the buffer
and if I use the narrow-to-region command so that only a small part
of the upper buffer material is displayed,
then the bottom end of the displayed material moves down by n chars
whenever n more chars are sent to standard output
even though the region I've narrowed to was supposed to have a
fixed lower boundary, well above where that standard output would
ordinarily appear without narrowing.
Since the value of n has no semantic significance in the narrowed
region, the result can be disconcerting...
Of course one can live with this. I report it only because emacs is so
wonderful in every other respect.
