I write in French, using ISO 8859-1 alphabet. The only way I know to insert accented characters in emacs is with quoted-insert (e.g. C-q 351 for e with acute accent). I have to agree with Joe that the current behavior of quoted-insert in overwrite-mode is a bug, or misfeature if you like.
