that's not what i meant by virtual newsgroup (though i can see how in
the context of the previous article it seemed that way).  just to keep
things simple, let's call your idea a "private hierarchy".  i agree
with your complaints about private hierarchies.  i find vm and dired
together (with a flattened private hierarchy) to be pretty good, but
there are features that the combination lacks.

for example, i would like to be able to give a search string that will
initiate the equivalent of a recursive grep on my hierarchy and bring
up a vm folder that contains all (and only) the saved articles that
contain that search string in the directory.  (kyle jones are you
reading this?)  the vm virtual folder mechanism combined with find and
xargs and grep might work to do this.

a virtual newsgroup is a different idea.  i wrote about virtual
newsgroups last night, but i think the post never got out :-(.  i'll
post it again right now.  the subject line will be "splitting
newsgroups".
