We have recently joined the news network, and I have been trying to
use rnews, but with only limited success. Is gnus the same as
   rnews?

No.

If so, how do I get an up to date version, and if not, how do I get
   it anyway?

Get GNUS via UUCP from osu-cis!/u/public/emacs/gnus/gnus3.11.tar.Z or
via FTP from tut.cis.ohio-state.edu:pub/gnu/gnus/gnus-3.11.tar.Z.
Drop me a line if you need UUCP-ing instructions.
