you know how you can process kill files off-line with gnus-batch-kill? here's an extension of that idea: sort and thread all subscribed newsgroups every day at midnight or whenever with a cron job, saving the article lists to a file. then when you read, simply read in the article lists and merge in articles that have arrived since midnight. voila. has anybody done this? any comments? does it sound like a good idea? any of the current maintainers thought of it? (hint: besides speeding things up considerably, it would allow really complex, interesting, normally very slow sorting to be done every night.) -- i'm open to comparing research career notes with other cogsci/cogneuro people.

In article <KPC.93Jan22233516@zog.arc.nasa.gov> kpc@pluto.arc.nasa.gov (k p c) writes: sort and thread all subscribed newsgroups every day at midnight or whenever with a cron job, saving the article lists to a file. then when you read, simply read in the article lists and merge in articles that have arrived since midnight. That's what mthreads does (although not for gnus). One of the happiest days in my life was when I was able to type rm mthreads thanks to Mr. Collyer and his nov database. There aren't enough cycles or disk space on the planet to handle this task.
