Meta key in shelltool

It would be nice to run emacs in a shelltool or cmdtool because then I can cut and
paste to/from it. But the normal (for me) Meta key, namely the keys with diamonds
on on either side of the space bar on a Sun keyboard do not seem to be recognized
as Meta, or anything else for that matter, when shelltool is in charge. Is there
a fix for this?
