Screen update wrong on SCO ODT 2.0

I have compiled Emacs on SCO ODT 2.0 (UNIX 3.2.4) but the updating of
the display is wrong.  When I enter text, a space is inserted between
each character.  A Control-L will refresh the screen and remove the
interleaving spaces.

Any ideas how to correct this problem?  Thanks,
