Emacs reading from a named pipe?

How can I get emacs (18.55) to read from a named pipe (using
Insert-File)? When I try the process that the other end of the just
pipe gets killed and I get no data from it. (I do get data when I 'cat'
the pipe, however.)

Thanks for any help...
