From the documentation of auto-save-mode:

	auto-save-mode:
	Toggle auto-saving of contents of current buffer.
	With arg, turn auto-saving on if arg is positive, else off.

Now, the question is, does Emacs consider 0 to be a positive number
or not. I think it does. I would -1 instead of 0 if I were you.
