trouble with ispell

Hello
For some unknown reason ispell stoped working for me in emacs.
when I run any of the emacs ispell commands I get the following
message in my mini buffer "writing to process: invalid argument ispel"
I notice that I also get the following message in the cmdtool I used
to start emacs from "Fatal error (1)". ispell seems to work fine if I
use it from a cmdtool or xterm

also I can not seem to get ispell to work from an emacs-shell? I get some message about "Screen too small: need at least 10 lines"

I am running gnuemacs 18.58 on a sun sparc station 2 with openwindows.
I do not know if this is part of the problem or not, but I installed a
new version of my OS yesterday.

I do not know what version of ispel.el i am using (it says something
about ported to ispel version 3.0) Sorry but I also do not know the exact version of ispell I am using. (I do not have access to the source code)

thanks in advance
Andy

With one "l" or two? It might be useful to use cut-and-paste to copy
the message accurately into a posting; accurate error messages make
diagnosis easier.

It sounds like you aren't successfully starting ispell. Why, I can't
tell based on the information given.

This message could be improved to be more informative. Emacs doesn't
support terminal emulation (cursor-control escape sequences) in shell
window, so ispell can't be run from an emacs shell (except in -a or -l
mode).

You can get the version of ispell.el from the $Header or $Id line.
The version of ispell itself is given by "ispell -v". If "ispell -v"
doesn't report 2.0.02 or 3.0.09, you should pick up patches to bring
yourself up to one of those levels.
