emacs 19 new isearch

In emacs 18.59 info, node Search Changes, one can read:

The most important change in incremental search is that RET now
terminates a search, and ESC does not. [ ... ]

(This change is somewhat of an experiment; it might be taken back
by the time Emacs 19 is really released.)

Please, don't take it back! The thing I most hate in emacs is that
you must hit ESC to terminate a search. One time over two i hit
either a RET, one of the arrow keys, or one of the PgUp, Home and so
on keys. Since I use a vt100, those keys send a sequence beginning
with ESC: the search is terminated and the rest of the sequence is
inserted into the buffer. Sometimes I don't even notice that until I
get a compilation error!

I keep making this error even though I have used emacs for more than
two years now and I use it daily.

Thanks.

So how does one incrementally search for text that includes a newline?

You can type C-q in isearch to quote a character; e.g. in your article
I searched sucesfully for "?^J-" by typing C-s ? C-q C-j.

I have changed the search-exit-char to C-m myself when I heard about
this some time ago and I am very happy with this change. I always
found it really annoying that in isearch an inadvertently typed
function key destroyed my text. This is *especially* annoying when you
haven't even noticed it and the compiler issues strange error messages
about code that you didn't intend to modify.

BTW, what I use *is* Emacs 18.59, I am a little puzzled by the
original poster's statement about finding this in the info of 18.59. I
did *not* find it in 18.59's info, and I believe that this is a
statement of Jamie Zawinski about Lucid Emacs.

The same way one searches for a text that includes a ESC now.

I have yet to search for ESC. I search for newlines all the time.

BTW, would M-< (ESC <) termianate a search? Now that I think of it,
why not use C-space (set-mark) to terminate a search? When a search
is terminated, the mark gets set anyway.

It *is* in the 18.59 info. In the info files that come with emacs
18.59 there's a chapter called 'Antenews' which contains information
on changes that will be introduced in emacs 19.

In the emacs-18.58 I'm using under X window system, miscellaneous
control characters terminate the search, including meta'd characters.
E.g. if I hit Alt-V, the search terminates and scroll-down is executed.
Will this still be possible with the emacs 19 new isearch?

I set search-exit-char to -1 and search-exit-option to t so that
`random control characters' and nothing else terminate a search. I
then use C-@ (set-mark) to terminate a search, unless I want to do
some other command instead.

The only thing I can't then do is search for newline by typing RET in
the string -- I have to use C-Q C-J instead, and I find that a minor
pain.

I agree. I got so fed up with this problem that I changed the key in
my .emacs file.

	(setq search-exit-char ?\^M)

Its far more civilised now.

Paul.

With C-q. For example, to search for foo<ret>bar you would type:

C-s f o o C-q C-j b a r

Note that the new line character in Emacs is actually C-j, not C-m.
