I typically sort by date sent when using vm. One thing that bites me once in a
while is when I receive a message where the date field looks like "08 Apr 92"

Just about every mailer I deal with gives dates that look like "8 Apr 92"

I've looked at RFC822, and it appears to be ambiguous about whether the first
type is valid or not (it says 1*2DIGIT, where digit is 0..9).

The effect of the first type is to cause the message to sort after all
messages with dates of the second type.

I'm wondering if anyone has a hack that makes the date field sort numerically
instead of lexically. I took a look at the .el stuff today, but quickly
decided that I was in over my head.

Every once in a while some stupid mailer gives 4 digit year values (e.g.
1992 instead of 92). I know that isn't RFC822, but it'd sure be nice to have a
hack that understood 4 digit years and caused them to sort "correctly" with
respect to the 2 digit variety.

3)
From what I can tell, sorting by date sent doesn't pay attention to the time
part of the date. Is there such a thing as sort by date and time sent?
