Problem saving INBOX when (setq vm-group-by "author")

I have just recently starting using vm (a former elm user) and decided
to jump in at V 5.32.  Everything worked very nicely until I decided
to set vm-group-by to "author".  So now when I go to quit vm
I see the message

'Stuffing attributes'            followed by
'Invalid function: (macro lambda (n) (list (quote if) (list (quote >) n 0) 1 .....'

Ultimately INBOX is never saved.

I'm running with Epoch 4.2, and using SuperCite 2.2 along with vm

If this is a vm problem, and nobody else has seen it before, I would be
happy to help in fixing the thing.
