problems with vm-search mode

I am running vm from lucid-emacs. Lucid emacs uses the newer
isearch-mode package and vm-search-mode seems to be dependent on the
old isearch mode (in particular, it seems to depend on variables like
search-repeat-char, search-reverse-char etc. which are not defined as
variables in the new isearch mode. Is there an easy way to make
vm-search work under these conditions?
