Unable to load vm.elc

I'm running on a Sun 386i with SunOS 4.0.2. vm-5.32beta gave me
problems with making; I had to compile each .el by hand. After
compiling each component, however, the Makefile worked correectly.
Putting vm in /usr/local/emacs/info worked but putting vm.elc in
/usr/local/emacs/lisp was not very successful. M-x vm just gives back
a "no match" despite having both the owner and permissions match
other, successful libraries (e.g., rmail.elc). Ideas? Suggestions?

You need to put

(autoload 'vm "vm" nil t)

into your .emacs file.
