I had an emacs sitting in VM on my terminal at home. I went in to work, read mail there, came home, and typed "g" without remembering to quit VM first. Guess what, it got my new mail and saved my inbox without ever noticing that the version on disk was newer than the version it had in the buffer. Happy happy. Joy joy. Luckily I was able to pull my messages back from the jaws of death because I have emacs make backup versions every time it saves, but there would seem to be a call to verify-visited-file-modtime missing somewhere... -- Jamie

When you do a `g' VM does not save the old INBOX buffer over the disk copy of INBOX. It appends whatever it finds in the your spool mailbox to the disk copy of INBOX and the buffer copy of INBOX. Two separate operations, so the contents don't mix. If you hit make changes and hit `S' after the `g' then you do lose.
