Epoch 4.2 and gnuserv

I'm running Epoch 4.2 on a sparc station under Motif 1.2.1.  I tried
to pick up the "gnuserv" stuff written by Andy Norman and apply it to my
current version of Epoch.  The version of "gnuserv" that I picked up
came from archive.cis.ohio-state.edu.  For starters I got three
undefined symbols in x11fns.c:

   WindowMapped,
   XXdisplay, and
   XXwindow.

At that point I quit.  Has anybody gotten "gnuserv" to work with Epoch
4.2?  If not, do you have any clues about what might be going wrong?
