The build appears to hang in dumping the final loaded version of
epoch... has anybody else seen this and/or gotten around this?

I just built the same version of Epoch on the same OS, almost same
machine (720), using the native cc.  I didn't have so much problem,
and definitely didn't see what you got.  Did you follow the
instructions in etc/MACHINES?
