Can lightbrite or similar packages be configured to use different font
styles (such as italic, bold, or different fonts) rather than color?

Sure. For lightbrite, plop the following lines in your .emacs before
loading it and change the ("foreground" . "color") schemes to
("font" . "name").

  (defvar brite::comment-styles '(("foreground" . "#7f9fcf"))
    "*Style specification list for comment style.")
  (defvar brite::mild-styles '(("foreground" . "red"))
    "*Style specification list for mild style.")
  (defvar brite::striking-styles '(("foreground" . "hot pink"))
    "*Style specification list for striking style.")
  (defvar brite::intense-styles '(("foreground" . "yellow"))
    "*Style specification list for intense style.")
  (defvar brite::blazing-styles '(("foreground" . "green"))
    "*Style specification list for blazing style.")
  (defvar brite::hot-styles '(("foreground" . "magenta"))
    "*Style specification list for hot style.")
  (defvar brite::earnest-styles '(("foreground" . "alice blue"))
    "*Style specification list for earnest style.")

e.g.:

  (defvar brite::comment-styles '(("font" . "*courier-medium-r-normal-*-14-*"))
    "*Style specification list for comment style.")

I take this from my .emacs, it was based on lightbrite documentation.
I'm using SUN sparc's(color) and slc's(b&w)

  (defun make-style-with-font (font)
    "Make a style with font FONT."
    (let ((s (epoch::make-style)))
      (set-style-font s font)
      s))
  (defun set-style-colors ()
    (setq red-style-color "red")
    (setq green-style-color "forestgreen")
    (setq yellow-style-color "firebrick")
    (setq magenta-style-color "magenta")
    (setq comment-style-color "#7d9ec0"))
  (if (> (epoch::number-of-colors) 2)
      (set-style-colors)
    (setq red-style (make-style-with-font
                     "*-courier-bold-o-*-0-*"))
    (setq green-style (make-style-with-font
                       "*-lucidatypewriter-bold-*"))
    (setq yellow-style (make-style-with-font
                        "*-courier-bold-r-*-0-*"))
    (setq magenta-style (make-style-with-font
                         "*-fixed-bold-*"))
    (setq comment-style (make-style-with-font
                         "*-courier-medium-o-*-0-*"))
    (setq yellow-underline-style (make-style-with-font
                                  "*-lucidatypewriter-bold-*"))
    (setq red-underline-style (make-style-with-font
                               "*-lucidatypewriter-bold-*")))

  (load "lightbrite")

Hope this help

Merry Christmas
