g++ 1.27.0 does not work with gdb+ 2.8.0 on Sun 3?

I have compiled g++ 1.27.0 on a Sun 3, first with gcc 1.28:
that produced a compiler which ran fine, but a debugger
that says ``Bad symbol table format, unexpected ',' at position
93'' or some similar message. (This is gdb+ 2.8.0.)
Then I compiled it with gcc 1.27 (the way I probably should have done
it in the first place), and everything went fine until genrecog
told me: ``Two instructions matched the same pattern at line 2''
or something similar.

Has anyone else encountered any problems on a Sun 3?
We are running 3.4.
