Has anyone successfully built GCC/G++ 2.2.2 on the SONY NEWS machines?

I have a lab of 3710s running BSD 4.3, and a laptop running System V
(NEWS OS 5.0). They are all MIPS-architecture machines.

I've been struggling for a few days now (hopefully haven't overlooked 
the obvious problems). 

Steps/notes: 

1) Using configure --target=mips-sony-bsd (or mips-sony-bsd43) I 
   got unresolved linker errors for "setvbuf". I tried commenting
   out the calls, but then bombed later.
   [This was for the 3710s running BSD]

2) Using configure --target=mips-sony-sysv on the laptop, I got
   a compile error within gcc.c (used conditional in a static
   assignment). I modified this, and finally ended up with a fatal
   error (something to do with obstack, not sure what). 

Help!!!! I'd be glad to compile info on the problems I've had 
and summarize to the net.
