2.2.2 on RS/6000

I'm trying to compile gcc 2.2.2 on the RS/6000 running AIX 3.2.2. This
is the error that I am getting:

_muldi3
Assembler:
/tmp/ccLOsDM2.s: line 25: 1252-142 Syntax error.
make: 1254-004 The error code from the last command is 1. 

has anyone has an error like this compiling with 3.2.2? I read the
README.RS6000 file about the problem with /bin/as. Does that fix apply
to this problem? Thanks...
