Hi Brian,
This patch was posted a while back:

In article <43c26k$7a8@alphabits.shr.dec.com>
rob@alphabits.shr.dec.com (Rob Marshall) writes:
rob> mips-tfile, /tmp/ccaavyua.s:0 index 4294967295 is out of bounds
rob> for lstrs, max is 0, mips-tfile.c line# 4643

The 3.2c 'as' no longer includes by default some debugging info that
it used to, and that mips-tfile needs. This appears to be consistent
with the documentation, so we did not report this to DEC as a bug. I
came up with a minimal patch--do a 'make distclean', apply the
following patch, and rebuild. It should work, though I've had one
report of failure that we haven't figured out yet.

Hope this helps,
