Hi.

This is my first attempt to compile the gcc-2.2.2 complete package.

My machine is an HP-827 running hp-ux; here is more complete info:
        HP-UX A.08.02 E 9000/827

Following instructions in the INSTALL file, I configured with the
following parameters & results (I kept the output in a nohup.out file):

+ configure --target=hp827-hpux --with-gnu-as --with-gnu-ld
--------------------------------????????????? ?????????????

Linked `config.h' to `./config/xm-pa.h'
Linked `tm.h' to `./config/pa1-ghpux.h'
Linked `md' to `./config/pa.md'
Linked `aux-output.c' to `./config/pa.c'
Linked `tconfig.h' to `./config/xm-pa.h'
Merged x-pa-hpux.
Created `Makefile'.
Links are now set up for target hp827-hpux.

At end of configure, STATUS = 0

I am unsure if I should have included the --gnu-as nad --gnu-ld
parameters. It seemd the logical thing to do but that could be the
source of my problem.

BTW, if you recognize some of this nonsense, by all means, skip the
next couple of screenfuls. I warned you it's long-winded. :-)

Continuing the instructions, I did the preliminary make:

nohup make LANGUAGES=c >stage-0.out 2>&1

Here are some error messages I got:

        cc -g -o cccp cccp.o cexp.o version.o obstack.o ` case "cc" in "cc") echo alloca.o ;; esac `
cc: 477: Can't stat /usr/lib/end.o. Proceeding though file probably does not exist.

Here is another, similar error message:
        cc -g -o genattr \
         genattr.o rtl.o ` case "obstack.o" in ?*) echo obstack.o ;;
esac ` ` case "cc"@"alloca.o" in "cc"@?*) echo alloca.o ;; esac ` ` case "" in ?*) echo ;; esac `
cc: 477: Can't stat /usr/lib/end.o. Proceeding though file probably does not exist.

OK, what's going on here? What is 'end.o' and how did it get involved
in this? What is 'stat'? I had a similar problem with compiling bash
and folks told me all would be fine when I get gcc compiled. ;-(

I got this error message with the following [executable] modules:

cccp, genattr, genflags, gencodes, genconfig, genpeep, genrecog,
genextract, genoutput, genemit, genattrtab, cc1, gccnew

Note that this did not stop the make file from using some of these
executables - gencodes, genconfig and some others.

To top it all off, I am getting nasty error messages from the
assembler - nearly all the same message. Example:

as: /usr/tmp/cca08738.s @line#26 [err#1050]
Illegal symbol in label position - .stabs "double:t13=r1;8;0;",128,0,0,0

Oh, yes - there is one more nsaty message - only once:

as: /usr/tmp/cca08738.s @line#136 [err#1051]
Illegal symbol in opcode position - :

Whew!
As I said earlier, it is possible that I should have omitted the
--with-gnu-as (and ld) parameters. It is vary likely that I had
misunderstood the instructions regarding the use of these parameters.

Now, if anyone is still willing to speak to me about the above, please
reply. e-mail is preferred but a posting will get the message to
others in my situation.

Thanks very much.
