The ATT C++ 2.1 iostream library has an attach (int fd) method in filestream base, and it is inherited in fstream, ifstream, and ofstream. In libg++ 2.1 the filebuf class has this method, and you can get at this object from the Xfstream but for ATT compatability, you probably should add this method to fstream, ifstream, and ofstream.
