libg++ installation failure

Attention Please,

I am attempting to install the GNU C++ library (libg++-2.2) on a
sun3 (sunOS4.1.1) but so far I'm failing rather miserably. After
reading and re-reading the README file and the libg++.texinfo file
provided with the distribution, I believe I have followed the
installation instructions as faithfully as I can. I should note
that the GNU C compiler (gcc-2.2.2) installation was done some
time ago and has been functioning properly. Moreover, BISON, GAS, and
GNU make (latest versions) have similarly been installed and operational.

I would like to provide you with a transcript of my attempts at
installation as well as the error messages returned and see if perhaps
you can offer suggestions. The name of the machine is "right" and
the transcript below includes the directory as the command line prompt.

   right[/usr/local/libg++-2.2]> ./configure sun3 -prefix=/usr/local -target=sun3
   right[/usr/local/libg++-2.2]> Created "Makefile" in /usr/local/libg++-2.2
   right[/usr/local/libg++-2.2]> gmake all >gmake.out &
   [1] 15169
   right[/usr/local/libg++-2.2]> as: error (/usr/tmp/cca15307.s:34): Invalid operand
   nm: dummy.o: cannot open
   nm: dummy.o: cannot open
   nm failed to find FUNC in dummy.o!
   ./utils/gen-params: -1: bad number
   gmake[1]: *** [_G_config.h] Error 1

Note that when I ran "gmake" I redirected output to a file. The contents of
that file (gmake.out) are:

   echo "# !Automatically generated from ./functions.def" "- DO NOT EDIT!" >needed2.awk
   grep '^DEFVAR(' < ./functions.def | sed -e '/DEFVAR/s|DEFVAR.\([^,]*\).*|/\1/ { printf \"#ifndef NEED_\1\\n#define NEED_\1\\n#endif\\n" }|' >>needed2.awk
   grep '^DEFFUNC(' < ./functions.def | sed -e '/DEFFUNC/s|DEFFUNC.\([^,]*\).*|/\1/ { printf \"#ifndef NEED_\1\\n#define NEED_\1\\n#endif\\n" }|' >>needed2.awk
   cc -c -g -I. -I./../include  ./dummy.c
   (cc  dummy.o  ) >errors 2>&1 || true
   rm -f a.out dummy.o
   echo "/* !Automatically generated from ./functions.def" "- DO NOT EDIT! */" >config.h
   awk -f needed2.awk <errors >>config.h
   cc -c -g -I. -I./../include  basename.c
   cc -c -g -I. -I./../include  getopt.c
   cc -c -g -I. -I./../include  getopt1.c
   cc -c -g -I. -I./../include  obstack.c
   cc -c -g -I. -I./../include  spaces.c
   cc -c -g -I. -I./../include  concat.c
   cc -c -g -I. -I./../include  fdmatch.c
   cc -c -g -I. -I./../include  argv.c
   cc -c -g -I. -I./../include  strerror.c
   cc -c -g -I. -I./../include  strsignal.c
   echo "# !Automatically generated from ./functions.def" "- DO NOT EDIT!" >needed.awk
   grep '^DEF(' < ./functions.def | sed -e '/DEF/s|DEF.\([^,]*\).*|/\1/ { printf \"\1\.o " }|' >>needed.awk
   awk -f needed.awk <errors >needed-list
   echo  >>needed-list
   cc -c -g -I. -I./../include  memmove.c
   cc -c -g -I. -I./../include  ntrtoul.c
   rm -rf libiberty.a
   ar qc libiberty.a basename.o getopt.o getopt1.o obstack.o spaces.o concat.o fdmatch.o argv.o strerror.o strsignal.o memmove.o strtoul.o
   ranlib libiberty.a
   rootme=`pwd` ; export rootme; CC="gcc `if [ -f ${rootme}/../gcc/gcc ] ; then echo -I${rootme}/../gcc/include ; else echo ; fi`"; export CC; ./utils/gen-params  >tmp-params.h

As you can see, the installation did not preceed very far before the
failure occurred. The script "./utils/gen-params" was resonsible for
printing the error message that "nm failed to find FUNC in dummy.o!" but
since this error happened after the assembler error
   "as: error (/usr/tmp/cca15307.s:34): Invalid operand"
then I guess the actual problem occurred prior to running the script.
Unfortunately, the file "/usr/tmp/cca15307.s" did not exist after "make"
terminated so I cannot easily provide you with this apparently offending file.

Hope you can help me out. Please let me know if you require more information
or files, etc.

Thank You,
Dana Swift
