I would recommend not using ISI's "as" for the simple reason that it
makes the tm file easier. I initially had it set up for "as" and
redefined all those macros. Every time a new version of gcc came
out, I had to check to see if any tm-m68k macros changed so that I
could make similar changes in the isi "as" versions. I quickly
soured on this. Since "gas" works, there seems to be no reason to
avoid it. Also, I have found in the release 3 version of isi's "as"
a bug in its symbol table management of static variables. This makes
it very hard to debug programs. I do not know if the release 4
version has this problem.

As an aside, my port of gnu-ld to the ISI is incomplete. I had
intended to follow up with a general bug fix to gnu-ld that would
make it work, but then determined that the "fix" would break it for
vaxes and suns. I will continue working on it, and will submit the
changes once I figure it out.
