GAS support for the 386 is being implemented now by a volunteer.

I don't want to maintain any COFF support in GAS; this will not be
useful on GNU systems and I am not willing to let GNU staff time be
taken away by it.  Instead, I hope someone will sooner or later fix
the bugs in some programs we have that will make it possible to use
the GNU object file format on system V.
