The Makefile had the following added:
CC=/tuna_a/gnu/bin/gcc
CFLAGS=-O -traditional -fstrength-reduce
and all of the cc's were replaced with ${CC}. It bombed with
/tuna_a/gnu/bin/gcc -O -traditional -fstrength-reduce -DCHESSTOOL -O -c gnuchess
.c
/tuna_a/gnu/bin/gcc: Program cc1 got fatal signal 6.
*** Error code 1
Stop.
Taking out -fstrength-reduce stops the core dumping.
