  I believe gcc generated incorrect object code. Below are 
  two different compilations of ws_pm.c in
  /mit/extensions/lib/PEX/ws of the X distribution.  If you
  will notice the symbol XtStrings you will see that the 
  native compiler correctly labeled it as data while the
  gcc compiler labeled it as code causing the linker to
  hiccup.  This was done on a hp9000/730 running hpux 8.07
  using gcc version 2.2.2.
