FYI:

'configure --target i386-sun-sunos4.0'
'make LANGUAGES=c'

runs indefinitely on libgcc2.c while compiling -DL_muldi3

'rm -rf gcc-2.3.1', untar the source again...

'configure --target i386-sun-sunos4.0'
'make LANGUAGES=c CC="/usr/local/bin/gcc -B/usr/local/lib/"'
<[(/usr/local/bin/gcc == either gcc-1.42 or gcc-2.1)]>
'make stage1'
'make CC="stage1/xgcc -Bstage1" CFLAGS="-g -O"'
'make stage2'
'make CC="stage2/xgcc -Bstage2" CFLAGS="-g -O"'
'make compare'

reports .o file mismatches; continuing on...

'make stage3'
'make CC="stage3/xgcc -Bstage3" CFLAGS="-g -O"'
'make compare3'

reports all .o files match.
